About this science experiment

Learn about diffusion in this quick and fun experiment.

  • Skittles
  • A plate
  • A drinking glass
  • Water

  1. Arrange the Skittles in a circle around the edge of the plate. You can make any pattern you want, so be creative!

  2. After measuring the water, pour it into the drinking glass. Then use the glass to pour the water into the middle of the plate, slowly and carefully so that your Skittles pattern doesn't get rearranged.

  3. Wait for a few minutes, and then observe as a real Skittles rainbow appears before your very eyes. What's really happening? (Yes, you can eat the rest of the Skittles now!)
